Speech therapists assess and treat individuals with language, speech, communication, and swallowing disorders. To prepare students for this role, they receive training in linguistics applied to typical and clinical communication, sound physics and analysis related to hearing and speech, anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology relevant to speech, language, and swallowing, understanding the psychological and social impact of communication needs, and identification and treatment of various disorders, including voice, fluency, and cognitive impairments.
